On this Thursday November 10, the game Half Life: Opposing Force is turning 12 in our PC gaming community. Lets all applaud Gearbox Software, Wish them a Happy Anniversary, and celebrate their first game release! In which I also took part in. It makes me happy to see how successful they have grown.

I recently wrote an article on rules for community tournaments. Those rules covered the game settings and specifics. I wanted to post a sample of a terms of rules for entry agreement for entry into these events. These rules can be used for anything if you tailor them correctly. I used a short version because I wasn’t running a sweepstakes, the tournaments and contests were primary based on skill.

I would like to make it clear, I am not a lawyer by any means. So please use caution and do your research or contact a lawyer if you use anything in this post. However, I was given this to me by a lawyer years ago.

Achievements are one of the special awards and accolades players and teams covet. They allow the winners to talk smack, brag, and show off their awards online. I created my achievement system in 1998 while I was a volunteer for Microsoft on the Internet Gaming Zone. I was the youngest and first ever host for retail tournaments in Microsoft's history. I was the host of the Clan World Tournament (CWT). I had to find a way to provide a meaningful prize to the winners that wasn’t considered tangible or have value. I found the solution in a leader board that gave points to the winners and a custom graphic representation of a trophy. The trophy and leadership achievement system provided an addicting experience. I participated in a weekly twitter #cmgrchat yesterday. The topic covered contests for communities. I brought up how other people use twitter for contests using Twitter and specifically ReTweets. I must of hit an inner rage button and rightfully so. I was messaged with negative responses. Most people don’t like contests that don’t have a real chance in winning or just continue spam your time lines or hash tags with fake advertising without mercy. I am not sure of the metrics that show users gains or lost for using any of these methods. This is just my thoughts.

Here is a few twitter contests that I dislike the most.

1) The contest where you have to be the 100th re tweeter to win something. While I'm not against the idea if its a very short number, but come on the 100th? You could be waiting a week if the community is slow and inactive and if its active and fast...

When I ran my community I had a the job of keeping my community interested. And I had to attract new people into the community. I would use contests to help fill both these holes. The contests allowed me to keep my internal community happy and involved. Externally, I could reach out by submitting to key news to sites to post. These news posts of the contests on gaming websites and world of mouth sharing was a huge key in receiving free advertising for my large gaming network. I didn’t have Facebook or Twitter when I was running these contests. I had to use other viral marketing techniques such as: email, forums, refer a friend, newsletters and messengers to spread the word.

Community contests are not a substitute for quality content. The creation of these contests keep your members happy and interested in your brand. Your members should recognize that your trying to do something...

I recently saw a tournament online where the entire match consisted of the best of two out of three on using three different maps played just once. The time per map was 10 minutes. That means if there was no problems with the launching of games that the entire match length could last approximately 30 minutes plus loading times. That is not a very spectacular or compelling match if you ask me. Tournament matches should have a format where the matches feel like the players or teams are getting a real chance to win their match. Matches with a short hook is either inexperienced and/or they want the tournament over super fast. They just want to take the sponsorship money and run. Maybe they want quantity of entrants and not quality of an amazing tournament.

Back in 1998, I created the first ever Iron-man Tournament System on the Internet. The goal of the tournament was to promote ClanLadder.com ladder play and get the most matches played over a short period of time. I usually had this tournament last a week or weekend. The Iron-man Tournaments covered Jedi Knight Dark Force 2 on the Zone.com. Each player and clan received 1 points wins and losses didn’t count against them. The players, if they were in a clan could not have wins/points counted for them if they played fellow clan mates. At the end of the tournament, the winners were announced and prizes were awarded to clans and individual players. The prizes at the time were awesome looking graphical trophy achievements.

TournamentsThis article is going to dive into writing game and match play rules for online tournaments. This article is not going to cover terms of service and/or rules of participation agreements. I am going to assume that the process is already finished when they signed up. The next step is to set up the rules to be more individualized for the tournament itself. Every tournament has to have very specific and ironclad rule set for match play. This protects your tournament from problems, deviations and interpretations. Allowing the participants to argue, because of your oversight, could take up valuable time. They may even be right. This is where your good intentions to provide the community something noteworthy with your valuable time can go off track.

Every community site can always use an extra pair of hands to help itself internally. Every successful site always had its fans who take an interest in the direction or purpose of the site. Sites always have weaknesses and holes where it cannot afford to hire someone to do a job due to budgets and other reasons. Your marketing team sends the external audience or site traffic to your website that sets the tone of conversation in your forums from social media outlets. In steps the volunteer, who is recruited to fill some type of the gap in your site's operation such as nights, peak or off-peak, and weekends when they are already active but you and most of your team isn’t available.

Torunament LogoIf you ever have entered an online tournament your either had one of the two methods to join the tournament; Sign up on a website and show up at a place on date and time. Or you had to show up at a date and time to be entered and your opponent was picked. This article assumes there is a place where the tournament is being administered in an online chat room or web/game service. So the question is what are the benefits of having a pre-sign up tournament verse open sign up process.

Pre-Sign ups

Pre-sign up process allows the host to schedule or stagger the bracket matches of the tournament . The tournament host  can have a larger cut off size for the tournament. It also allows the host to be prepared with enough help and game servers (if needed) to be set up and ready for the tournament. The one downfall to this process is the first round of every tournament has multiple forfeits/no shows. I always called this the forfeit round. The second round you sometimes have to reseed so everyone has a match and the tournament begins. The bigger the size of the tournament the bigger number of forfeits and no shows.

This article is to introduce you to the most common tournament format styles. Tournaments are a great way to promote a products or services. All tournaments can be seeded by some formula or random.



Single Elimination

This format is by far the easiest format to host and manage during a tournament, The method is simple. The winner advances and the loser goes home. This style also allows your tournament to be the fast and efficient time wise then the other formats because of the fewest matches.Single Elimination Bracket 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 



 

 

 

Double Elimination

This format gives your tournament more substance as far making the participants feel like they had a better chance to to win. Losing once could be an aberration to one team but losing twice is definitely a wake up call or a sense of content where they tried their best. This article is intended to help someone who has never hosted a tournament to get an idea of what steps are needed to prepare. I have personally hosted many successful tournaments with hundreds of players and teams. Before you think about creating your tournament you need to plan few steps. These steps are easy to think about but hard to implement. Just a bunch of simple questions to ask yourself based of Who, What, Where, Why and When. I intentionally left off tournament promotion and prizes questions in this article.

Who is hosting the tournament?

The name of the person or entities that is facilitating the event. If it is yourself just list your name and website.

What platform is this tournament being held on?

Just explain whether this is a PC or console tournament. If its a console tournament you may need to require players to use a PC in a chat lobby and to provide...
