Community Manager GavelAre you a member of a community with too many rules? Are you a community manager always setting up rules to prevent or stop things from happening on a repetitive basis? Are you constantly upgrading the penalties to those who break them? Should familiarity and predictability breed contempt over time as a community manager?

I recently interviewed for a Social Media Community Manager position at a great company. As part of the process, I had to fill out a questionnaire. Here is one of the questions I answered.

"Name three companies that are blowing up social media and identify what their strategies are, and why they are successful. Is there anything they could do to improve?"

Social Media BroadcastingI found myself with a dilemma while owning this blog. I needed to keep my older content relevant so people can read some of my favorite articles that I have written. I found the best way to keep your content from aging and appealing to your new followers on social media is to use tools for broadcasting.

Rebecca and Ryan are two single adults who later became a couple of acquaintances. They both lived in the middle of one of the boroughs in New York city.  Rebecca had a tattoo of hash-tag  on the small of her back. Rebecca often dressed in seductive clothing with her tattoo visible to see who would tweet the hash tag.  As they were frequent riders of the subway, they often noticed one another but never really knew each other beyond being an acquaintance or subway buddies on the ride to and from the city for work.

Creating online communities can be your biggest source of driving awareness to your product and service(s). Many people/businesses do not understand how to create a community, the work involved and the detail that goes in to setting the foundation. I am going to give you an overview of creating a community by comparing it to the beach.

Your Shiney New Social Media LicenseI recently read a few blog articles that dealt with the pros/cons of age as a reason not to employ someone in social media. I decided instead of using age as a medium,we should perhaps require a government issued license instead to prevent social media stupidity and require education.

Community Management LinksI took the liberty of compiling a list of resources and links for community managers. I was looking for the niche sites and people who supported the community. I am not looking for the commercial big sites. While social media sites are relevant to the community management field, I wanted to stick to more community oriented sites.

Volunteers MatterYesterday, I posted a question on Twitter which I called the “Community Manager Question of the Day”where I asked “Does the age of your volunteers matter when your recruiting volunteers?” I know it is a loaded question because the ultimate answer is varied by a number of factors. Lets discuss the factors why I used age as a requirement and how I learned to change my ways.

Large herd of CattleToo many times and too often members of a community are often forgotten for the who and the what they are. The members of your community are your customers. These members are often directed where to go repeatedly. Your customers are your stake holders who have invested time, money in to your product, and service because they believe in it.

If you have a community online to manage it is important to connect with potential customers to build the brand. Brands often use social media for external means of building a community and forums or custom software for internal communities. It is important to be able to connect with your audience multiple ways.

Layoffs happen far too often in the business world. No matter the reasons for the layoffs, lives are always changed, and companies are downsized. No matter the spin on the situation, layoffs are never a good thing for anyone involved. This causes a lot of negative press inside the internal communities and on external communities (social media, etc) for the company.

We have a big problem right now with Social Media. Every business wants to share their own information by just becoming a broadcaster for their clients, followers and customers. Every time information is posted there is often no one there to respond to the inquiries whether it is a question or comment. Sadly, it has become common place to ignore your base with this misuse of social media in all types of platforms and settings

Let's face it, we live in a social age of technology where we spend more time on social media than with most of the people in our everyday lives. It is just the way the internet has evolved to run our lives in the “always connected” world. We are establishing different types of friendships with new people we meet on the Internet.

Every community manager wants their community to be big and popular. When the community becomes popular, the community has to live up to the current standards that made them successful. Success often brings more people using your product and services. In turn, you will need to provide more support and customer service.

The Role of the Community ManagerFar too often I see jobs posted for the Community Managers use a copied ads from other businesses. Companies who need a “Community Manager” should identify what type of community manager need they need to fill and post the position. The job will list a super long laundry list of goals and expectations and at end of the job advertisement, ”We require a BS in Marketing or similar field”.

The position of “Online Community Manager” isn’t an new position for most companies already with established brands on the Internet. However, it is a “new” position often overlooked from the businesses looking to develop a market and a base for the people to interact with its brand.

I love twitter and like everyone else I want more followers for my social network. Everyday, I can get any random number of people clicking the follow button on my profile or from my blog website. In the past month or so, I have noticed many new people misusing twitter to get followers. I am not sure if it is because I am becoming more popular or not.

Hashtags are pretty popular right now because of Twitter. Hashtags are a form of meta data that allow searching for the same phrase. Twitter uses the “#” symbol to organize, index, and separate messages called tweets. Tweets are the messages we post on Twitter. Twitter has started an amazing trend where we can use any common word or phase as hashtag by adding the “#” symbol in front of the word or phrase.

Not many sites put in the time to put together a Mad Lib contest for their own community. Sometimes this contest can be seem to be more difficult then it really is. But in reality this contest is simple to implement for your community. Mad Lib contests allow your audience to fill in their own words to a preset paragraph with missing word objects.

I don’t know about you, but I enjoy hosting community caption contests. They allow people with in your community to provide creative answers to scenes, custom screen-shots or modified pictures. New CokeEvery community manager dreams that their community will be all sunshine and roses. However, that is rarely the case. Every player always has an opinion. When the community manager shares information, no one person consistently shares the same opinion on the topics. Everyone enjoys their game or community with various degrees of passion. Creating change can cause positive or negative feedback response. The result can cause a feeding frenzy for firestorm that can unleash hell on the community. Everyone wants their opinion to matter and to be heard. Its up to the community manager to convey the information in the most positive way.

I recently wrote an article on rules for community tournaments. Those rules covered the game settings and specifics. I wanted to post a sample of a terms of rules for entry agreement for entry into these events. These rules can be used for anything if you tailor them correctly. I used a short version because I wasn’t running a sweepstakes, the tournaments and contests were primary based on skill.

I would like to make it clear, I am not a lawyer by any means. So please use caution and do your research or contact a lawyer if you use anything in this post. However, I was given this to me by a lawyer years ago.

When I ran my community I had a the job of keeping my community interested. And I had to attract new people into the community. I would use contests to help fill both these holes. The contests allowed me to keep my internal community happy and involved. Externally, I could reach out by submitting to key news to sites to post. These news posts of the contests on gaming websites and world of mouth sharing was a huge key in receiving free advertising for my large gaming network. I didn’t have Facebook or Twitter when I was running these contests. I had to use other viral marketing techniques such as: email, forums, refer a friend, newsletters and messengers to spread the word.

Community contests are not a substitute for quality content. The creation of these contests keep your members happy and interested in your brand. Your members should recognize that your trying to do something...

Every community site can always use an extra pair of hands to help itself internally. Every successful site always had its fans who take an interest in the direction or purpose of the site. Sites always have weaknesses and holes where it cannot afford to hire someone to do a job due to budgets and other reasons. Your marketing team sends the external audience or site traffic to your website that sets the tone of conversation in your forums from social media outlets. In steps the volunteer, who is recruited to fill some type of the gap in your site's operation such as nights, peak or off-peak, and weekends when they are already active but you and most of your team isn’t available.

Volunteers can play an integral support role in plugging in coverage if you spend the proper amount of time screening who you recruit to help you out. Volunteers can be your average users that...
